In a thrilling twist from its 2021 experiment in Monaco where Gulf was a McLaren partner, the company opted to grant the final decision to Williams fans. This decision was implemented across a different series of races.

The Williams marketing team crafted four design options, named Heritage, Contemporary, Visionary, and Bolder than Bold.

Heritage, the first option, echoed the 2021 McLaren livery, honoring Gulf’s significant contribution to the sport and its iconic tenure in sportscar racing with Ford and Porsche. The remaining three offered modern renditions of the Gulf motif.

At the inception of the project, James Vowles, the team boss, preferred the Heritage option. However, in the final tally, Bolder than Bold edged out Heritage, with more than 180,000 votes across three knockout rounds.

Unveiled in London on Tuesday evening, the fresh design will be showcased on a Williams show car at the Goodwood Festival of Speed this weekend. Subsequently, it will be applied to the racing cars for Singapore and the two subsequent events.

Vowles said, “This contest was a fantastic way for our fans to actively participate and influence our team’s visual identity.”

Ed Scott, Williams’ Head of Creative and the livery design team leader, mentioned that the winning design lived up to its bold name.

“Bolder than Bold offered a chance to step outside the box and create something more inventive,” he stated.

“It is indeed bold and it makes unconventional use of the Gulf branding. The design brief was open-ended, allowing creative freedom while still maintaining the Gulf aesthetic.

“We had to be daring. The inspiration for this bold move came from past concept liveries. We altered the Gulf stripe into a Chevron, integrated it into a camouflage pattern, and complemented it with solid, orange Gulf-colored lines and angles adorning the car.”

However, Scott noted that blending the camouflage design wasn’t straightforward.

“Camo looks stunning on F1 cars! But, we had to carefully use it to avoid concealing too many sponsors. This was an opportunity to incorporate it in a way that flatters the car without compromising its visual appeal.

“I love the flow of the design. It’s innovative yet simplistic, which I think is really cool. It has a clean look and feel, despite the multiple elements incorporated in the design,” concluded Scott.
