At the Melbourne Grand Prix, Mercedes challenged Red Bull, who had been setting records in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. George Russell was on the front row of the race, while Lewis Hamilton was leading at first until Max Verstappen passed him and won.
Red Bull remain in the lead, but Lewis Hamilton was able to hold off Fernando Alonso’s Aston Martin, showing that Mercedes is making some key improvements in their racecar, the W14. This became even clearer when George Russell commented that he had gained a lot of understanding about how the car works.
Lewis Hamilton from Mercedes F1 W14 said that he felt really good and comfortable in the car during his race weekends. He also mentioned that the team is giving him the right tools and settings to make sure everything goes well. He believes that they have been doing their best and nothing more can be done.
Mercedes have been doing well lately, but it looks like their success in the Australian GP was just because of a couple of factors. The first one is that the track layout favoured them over other competitors. It’s also clear from Bahrain that Aston Martin’s car had more rear downforce than Mercedes’ car, which gave them an advantage in high-deg reduced venues.
When asked if the design of Melbourne’s racetrack helped Mercedes, their team boss Toto Wolff said it was beneficial. He added that their cars were not performing as well in the back but they knew which parts had to be improved.
Mercedes had a bad start to this race, but they were able to come back and secure second place which is still good. However, their biggest rival Red Bull was way ahead of them. Verstappen held back in the early stages but then he suddenly passed Lewis Hamilton with an impressive move that showed how big the gap between Mercedes and Red Bull really was.
Wolff said that Red Bull have a car which is amazingly fast when the DRS is open. Even though this makes it almost impossible to keep up with them, he believes in fairness and wants teams to find ways to help make sure that every car has equal speed on the straightaway.
Mercedes knows there are things outside of the track that need improving, specifically some issues at their factory. Lewis Russell has even said that during recent races, Mercedes intentionally avoided the best setup from the simulator.
My team and I have been working hard to get the best results for our set up,” he said. The last two weekends, we made changes to our car that weren’t in line with what computers had suggested.
I think maybe this is why we didn’t do too well in Bahrain. If I’d known then what I know now, I could have changed some things about our car so that it would have gone faster at the race.
“We need to figure out why the sims are saying one thing and we’re doing something else.”
Mercedes’ Journey Toward the Lead

We did a really good job because we were able to race against cars like Ferrari and Aston Martin. Now, if we can keep learning about our car and make upgrades, then we might be able to challenge the leaders even more. Everyone involved with Mercedes isn’t satisfied with just second place, so they hope that a new concept will help them move up in the ranks.
He said that the new concept is very important. He believes that it’ll help their team improve with better performance.
We are here not just to be good, but to win. We might have been better than Ferrari and Aston this time, but we’re still far away from where we want to be.
