In the ongoing 2023 season, Red Bull has emerged victorious in every race, while other teams including Mercedes, Ferrari, Aston Martin, and recently, McLaren, following the British Grand Prix last weekend, have been competing to claim the title of the second-fastest team.
The competitiveness has been varying considerably from one weekend to the next due to factors such as track attributes, the pace and efficacy of upgrades, and strategic choices.
As of now, Mercedes is positioned second in the constructors’ standings, holding a 22-point lead over Aston Martin. However, no team has consistently demonstrated itself to be the strongest contender against Red Bull.
The fluctuating competitiveness does not pose a challenge for Red Bull in identifying a stable competitor, according to team principal Horner. He asserts that the internal competition among other teams makes it “simpler” for Red Bull, allowing them to just concentrate on their performance.
Horner said, “In many ways, it simplifies things. It means that we just focus on ourselves and the rival changes every weekend. It’s fascinating to watch how the performance varies and it’s largely tyre-dependent too. For instance, this weekend [at Silverstone], we introduced another tyre, another structure, which might have had a minor impact.”
This comes after Lando Norris from McLaren finished second in the British GP, and Lewis Hamilton from Mercedes escalated from the seventh position to the third. Meanwhile, Ferrari saw a decline, finishing ninth and tenth.
Verstappen, the winner of the race, found the frequent changes in the line-up “quite puzzling”. However, he noted that these shifts depict an intensely competitive battle behind Red Bull.
Verstappen was more focused on maintaining his team’s leading position, which he described as the most “consistent factor” in the race.
Verstappen stated, “It’s quite puzzling to me as the opponent changes with each race weekend. The close competition means a slight improvement in car performance can make a significant difference on a specific track. As for the upcoming race in Hungary, I am uncertain about who will be the quickest or the second-quickest. So far, the consistent factor is that we seem to be leading every weekend, which is of utmost importance for us. But we must remember, Hungary has a completely different track, and we plan to implement some upgrades on our car there, hoping they will prove beneficial.”
