The Opening Act: Canadian Grand Prix Q1

Following a short red flag due to mechanical issues with Zhou Guanyu’s Alfa Romeo, Verstappen quickly set the pace in the somewhat wet but drying environment, clocking 1m21.988s. He went on to shave it down to 1m21.739s before Alonso emerged at the top with 1m21.583s, and then 1m21.481s. However, Verstappen would not be outdone, securing a time of 1m20.851s.

The casualties at the opening stage included Yuki Tsunoda (AlphaTauri), Pierre Gasly (Alpine), Nyck de Vries (AlphaTauri), Logan Sargeant (Williams), and Zhou. Tsunoda was subsequently penalized with a 3-place grid drop for impeding.

Canadian Grand Prix Q2 Developments

Alex Albon, driving a Williams, was the first to switch to slick tyres as the track dried, setting a leading time of 1m18.725s, a full second quicker than Alonso. Verstappen followed in second place, albeit nearly four tenths slower as rainfall began again.

At this stage, the drivers ousted included Charles Leclerc (Ferrari), Sergio Perez (Red Bull), Lance Stroll (Aston Martin), Kevin Magnussen (Haas), and Valtteri Bottas (Alfa Romeo). Stroll was penalized with a 3-place grid drop for impeding.

The Final Stage: Canadian Grand Prix Q3

Verstappen led the pack at the outset, clocking 1m27.059s, 0.227s ahead of Alonso. He then improved his timing to 1m25.858s, a clear 1.244s ahead of Nico Hulkenberg (Haas). Hulkenberg narrowly missed a red flag caused by Oscar Piastri’s McLaren crash at Turn 7. Hulkenberg was later penalized with a 3-place grid drop for over-speeding during the red flag.

Although the session continued, the track had become much wetter, solidifying the grid positions.

Alonso will commence from the third position, followed by Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton and George Russell. Esteban Ocon (Alpine) starts from sixth, ahead of Lando Norris (McLaren) and Carlos Sainz, who is under investigation for obstructing at the chicane.

Sainz was also issued a three-place grid penalty for impeding Gasly in Q1.

Piastri and Albon, unable to set a time, will begin from the fifth row.
