He went on to shave it down to 1m21.739s before Alonso emerged at the top with 1m21.583s, and then 1m21.481s. However, Verstappen would not be outdone, securing a time of 1m20.851s.

Canadian Grand Prix Q2 Developments

Alex Albon, driving a Williams, was the first to switch to slick tyres as the track dried, setting a leading time of 1m18.725s, a full second quicker than Alonso. Verstappen followed in second place, albeit nearly four tenths slower as rainfall began again.

Hulkenberg narrowly missed a red flag caused by Oscar Piastri’s McLaren crash at Turn 7. Hulkenberg was later penalized with a 3-place grid drop for over-speeding during the red flag.

Although the session continued, the track had become much wetter, solidifying the grid positions.

Alonso will commence from the third position, followed by Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton and George Russell. Esteban Ocon (Alpine) starts from sixth, ahead of Lando Norris (McLaren) and Carlos Sainz, who is under investigation for obstructing at the chicane.

Sainz was also issued a three-place grid penalty for impeding Gasly in Q1.

Piastri and Albon, unable to set a time, will begin from the fifth row.
