The 2023 F1 Austrian GP unfolded with Verstappen maintaining his pole position advantage and leading the pack into Turn 1. Leclerc and Carlos Sainz pursued him closely but were unable to overtake. Lewis Hamilton quickly climbed up the ranks and settled in fourth place, ahead of Lando Norris.

The opening lap saw a safety car intervention to clear debris resulting from a collision at Turn 1. Yuki Tsunoda suffered damage to his front wing and went off the track at Turn 4.

Sainz made attempts to challenge Leclerc for second place but received instructions from Ferrari to maintain his position. As a result, the gap between the top three drivers increased to 5 seconds behind Verstappen.

On lap 14, Nico Hulkenberg’s Haas encountered a mechanical issue, leading to a virtual safety car. Hamilton and Norris capitalized on this opportunity to make pit stops for fresh tires, along with the rest of the field, except for Fernando Alonso, Lance Stroll, and Perez.

The Ferraris made their pit stops one lap later, while Verstappen continued to stay out on the track. Sainz, unfortunately, lost ground during this phase, dropping from third to sixth place and expressing dissatisfaction with his strategist. However, he managed to overtake Norris on lap 17 and Hamilton two laps later, with the latter receiving a 5-second penalty for exceeding track limits.

Sainz eventually reclaimed his third position by overtaking Perez, but he trailed Leclerc by over 6 seconds at this stage.

Verstappen made his pit stop for hard tires on lap 25, surrendering the lead to Leclerc and Sainz. Within a lap, Verstappen swiftly dealt with Sainz, who also received a 5-second penalty for exceeding track limits, and set his sights on Leclerc, breaking Max’s streak of consecutive laps led since Miami.

Norris managed to surpass Hamilton, who faced brake issues, and secured fourth place on lap 29. However, a slow pit stop hindered Norris’s progress 13 laps later, while Hamilton had to serve his 5-second penalty during his pit stop.

Verstappen executed a successful overtake on Leclerc for the lead at Turn 3 on lap 35 and pulled away from the Ferraris, establishing a comfortable lead.

Perez, starting from 15th due to numerous lap deletions for track limits, fought his way up to fifth place. He overtook Norris at Turn 4 on lap 57 and engaged in a challenging battle with Sainz for third place. Perez finally made a decisive move on his third attempt at Turn 4 on lap 62, securing his position. However, Leclerc was too far ahead, ensuring his second-place finish.

Verstappen, with a significant lead, made a second pit stop with 21 laps remaining to switch to soft tires, guaranteeing the fastest lap of the race. He crossed the finish line with a comfortable 5-second lead over Leclerc, securing another well-deserved victory. Perez, Sainz, Norris, Alonso, Hamilton, Russell, Gasly, and Stroll completed the top ten.
