Stella highlighted the decisions he’s taken, such as introducing a fresh technical structure that eliminated the position of former technical director James Key. He claims this was simply about creating a system that best suited McLaren’s needs.
“We intended to create a different technical model that divides the aerodynamics, car concept and performance, and the engineering and design functions into three separate areas,” Stella explained. “This is just an alternate mode of operation.
“It’s not about any particular person; it just necessitates a more dispersed model for the technical organisation. That’s the reasoning behind it.
“In terms of the leadership that contributed to the shift, I’d like to commend all those who worked with me – COO Piers Thynne, CPO Daniel Gallo – and of course, all this under Zak’s strategic guidance. So, it’s all about teamwork.”
However, despite Stella’s humility, CEO Brown is confident about the considerable impact the Italian has had on the team.
“This guy is phenomenal,” Brown confessed to Sky. “His management of the challenges we faced at the start of the year, his introduction of a technical restructure, and his promotion of internal talent have been impressive.
“Although we’ve recruited some heavyweights, they haven’t started yet. So, this is still the result of the hard work of the men and women under Andrea’s leadership.”
