At the age of 34, van Gisbergen had his maiden appearance in the NASCAR Cup in Chicago earlier this month, competing on the city’s streets. He turned heads by winning his debut race after a stunning late-game surge, becoming the first to do so in the premier league of the sport in over six decades.
A little more than a month following his victory in Chicago, Van Gisbergen is scheduled to once again steer the Project91 vehicle for Trackhouse Racing, but this time at the Indianapolis Road Course on August 13th. Speculations are rife about the Supercars standout possibly transitioning full time to NASCAR in the years 2024 or 2025.

“This entire journey has unfolded in a way I never could have dreamt,” expressed Van Gisbergen in a statement released by the team.
“To even have the chance to participate in NASCAR was an opportunity I never anticipated, and to not only take part but to win and be granted another opportunity this year is more than I could have ever envisaged. I owe a huge debt of gratitude to Justin Marks, the entire team at Trackhouse Racing, and NASCAR for this opportunity. The warm welcome I received in Chicago from the NASCAR community and the global response following that race has been phenomenal. I am proud to be a part of this.”
When Van Gisbergen competes at Indy, he will encounter a familiar competitor on the grid. Brodie Kostecki, another Supercars racer, is poised to make his own NASCAR Cup Series debut in Indianapolis, driving for Richard Childress Racing.
The race’s impressive lineup will also include ex-Formula 1 World Champion Jenson Button and former Le Mans 24 victor Kamui Kobayashi.

This race will be the fourth time Trackhouse Racing has entered the No. 91 car over the past two seasons. Previously, former F1 World Champion Kimi Raikkonen drove the car at Watkins Glen in 2022 and COTA in 2023, along with SVG’s debut in Chicago.
“Following such a spectacular performance, it’s only fitting to continue this journey,” shared Marks. “Shane’s display in Chicago confirmed his world-class talent, and it was truly extraordinary. Everyone involved with PROJECT91, Trackhouse Racing, and the NASCAR fans gain by having him back. I believe it’s not an exaggeration to say that the entire motorsports world will be monitoring the No. 91 Chevrolet at Indianapolis.”
Darian Grubb, the crew chief who will once again manage the No. 91 Chevrolet’s pit, added, “Working with a talent like Shane van Gisbergen, who delivered such a stellar performance in his first race, was a real privilege.”
