Rising Kiwi Talent Emerges in Supercars Off-Season Frenzy

The budding 20-year-old has kicked off a promising career in the Supercars scene, clinching two victories from his first four second-tier Super2 races in the current season.

He’s currently under the banner of Walkinshaw Andretti United, competing in its revived Super2 programme alongside Zach Bates.

This opportunity marked a significant shift in trajectory for Wood, who was initially set to join the Porsche motorsport scheme via a Carrera Cup scholarship.

The pre-existing partnership with WAU naturally leads to speculation about Wood’s elevation to the primary league with the Ford team, especially if they decide not to renew their contract with Nick Percat for 2024.

Nevertheless, the upcoming year could present a variety of options for Wood, with Team 18 reportedly interested in recruiting the young Kiwi talent.

There could be a vacant spot in Team 18 next year, as Scott Pye is speculated to be reaching the end of his contract after this season.

Since its expansion to a two-car line-up in 2020 with Pye teaming up with experienced driver Mark Winterbottom, Team 18 has maintained the same roster. Winterbottom recently scored a pioneering victory for the squad – their first in the Supercars – this past Saturday in Darwin.

The Supercars off-season so far has been relatively mild, with the bulk of the discussion centered around Cam Waters’ future.

Tickford chief, Tim Edwards, hinted last month that he had options for all his drivers for 2024. However, Waters disclosed to F1 Flow.com on the same weekend that discussions regarding a new contract with the team hadn’t commenced yet.

Waters has also been loosely connected to a potential WAU contract.

In addition to Waters, another prominent driver, David Reynolds, might be up for grabs next year as his current contract with Grove Racing is nearing its conclusion.
