Red Bull Initiates Quintuple Modifications for Hungarian GP in F1

The Red Bull team, hailing from Milton Keynes, has had an impressive run this year with Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez clinching victory in all ten races till date.

Their achievements have been more noteworthy considering they avoided major overhauls like their competitors Mercedes, Ferrari, and McLaren have undertaken for their 2023 challenges.

Despite Red Bull’s previous developmental pace being rather consistent, they’ve intensified their efforts for the Hungarian Grand Prix to boost their performance.

The team implemented alterations to five distinct areas of its car, which are as follows:

  1. Expansion of the front brake duct exit to manage the increased brake energy and low average speed characteristics of the Hungarian Grand Prix circuit.  
  2. Expansion of the rear brake duct exit equipped with winglets to augment downforce and enhance airflow, tailor-made for the unique demands of the Hungaroring
  3. Broadening and decreasing the depth of the sidepod inlet to enhance the pressure at the radiator duct entry point, thereby improving cooling efficiency, especially crucial for one of the more challenging circuits in terms of car cooling.  
  4. A widened sidepod stretching to the front legs of the rear suspension in response to the altered inlet that modified the exit airflow path. 
  5. A recalibrated split line on the sidepod and refined floor edge detail to more effectively manipulate the upstream airflow.

Ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix, current world championship leader Max Verstappen expressed optimism regarding the potential benefits of the modifications.

“We have a few upgrades this weekend,” he stated. “We are hopeful that they will perform as anticipated, thereby enhancing our performance for future races.”

Red Bull is not the sole team implementing changes, as Mercedes has also introduced some modifications to their vehicle.

The Mercedes W14 now features a modified front wing endplate diveplane, enhancing airflow around the front tyre and improving flow to the car’s rear. 

Adjustments to the inboard front suspension include decreased camber to enhance airflow along the side of the chassis and the front part of the floor, which is expected to boost downforce. 

Furthermore, Mercedes has increased the cutout on the rear wing’s tip to augment the mass flow underneath, which is anticipated to further enhance downforce.
