In the recent British Grand Prix, Norris and Piastri clinched second and fourth places respectively.
This was a significant milestone for McLaren and its newly upgraded package, especially after experiencing difficulties in the first half of the season. It also marked a considerable achievement for F1 rookie Piastri, who has achieved his personal best in F1 by a wide margin.
The Australian prodigy has demonstrated his worth, repaying the trust McLaren placed in him when they went to extraordinary lengths to recruit him from Alpine the previous summer. Stella, McLaren’s team principal, further acknowledges that the 2021 Formula 2 champion has positively influenced Norris’s performance.
“Considering Oscar is a rookie, his performance is truly remarkable,” Stella commended. “He showed his speed right from the start, even during practice.”
“This establishes a synergy between the drivers as they both can identify areas of improvement from each other, thereby enhancing each other’s performance.”
Stella noted, “Having two competitive drivers not only impresses us, but it provides a mutual advantage as they both can learn from each other.”
After spending a year as an Alpine reserve driver, Piastri’s racing skills were seen as a potential area for growth. However, the 22-year-old showcased a mature understanding of race craft in Silverstone, skillfully keeping George Russell of Mercedes at bay, only missing a potential inaugural podium due to an ill-timed safety car.
“Oscar’s race craft truly emerged in Silverstone,” Stella added, “His ability to maintain tyre grip, drive cleanly in a tense racing situation, and his preparedness for the safety car restart on a hard tyre, were all immediately apparent.”
Stella praised his young driver, “This shows a mature race craft, which is incredibly impressive in someone so young.”
Piastri was driving in Silverstone with the groundbreaking upgrade package that Norris premiered in Austria, but without the new front wing which only Norris received in Silverstone.
McLaren plans to update Piastri’s car to match Norris’s in the Hungarian Grand Prix, along with additional updates to the MCL60, as part of a mid-season revamp aimed at increasing downforce levels and efficiency.
