McLaren Showcases Retro Chrome F1 Paint Scheme for British GP

McLaren has honored its distinct Triple Crown triumphs by executing a collection of three homage liveries at the Indianapolis 500. These were merged into a single design for Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, who sported the updated livery in Monaco and Spain.

Adding to its ongoing festivities, McLaren has announced a revival of the ‘fan-beloved’ chrome aesthetic which was a prominent feature from 2006-2014. Lewis Hamilton ran this look in 2008 when he seized his first world championship.

The livery was crafted in collaboration with McLaren’s partner, Google, which launched its Chrome web browser concurrent with Hamilton’s inaugural victory.

“Undoubtedly, racing enthusiasts have a deep affection for McLaren’s vintage chrome livery,” commented McLaren Racing CEO, Zak Brown.

“Google Chrome expressed interest in reviving elements of this legendary livery to celebrate our team’s past at the British Grand Prix, and we’re thrilled to deliver what our fans have been yearning for.

“I’m confident this livery will trigger nostalgic memories for many of our fans, and I’m eagerly anticipating its debut on the track at our home race.”

The ‘Chrome’ theme will be further enhanced with custom helmet designs, boots, and race suits for Norris and Piastri.

After Brown hinted that Norris had been urging him for a while to switch back to a chrome livery, Norris responded: “It was probably one of the initial things that I told him. I vividly recall, it was when he initially presented me with the 2019 livery design.

“He asked me, ‘Hey, what would you tweak about the car?’ and my response was ‘the entire thing’.

“For me, a stroll down the promenade, while I would adore a white and bright orange car – that design was superb – none of the current cars compare to the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes from those years, that I grew up witnessing.

“That’s the car I became enamored with. To a large extent, I can say that it inspired me to become a Formula 1 driver. Prior to that, my interests were more in MotoGP and motorcycles.

“I wasn’t really informed about racing, then I started watching some Formula 1, and it was Lewis [Hamilton] against Fernando [Alonso], despite being in the same team, and that’s when I fell in love.

“Each year, I’ve been coaxing Zak to veer a little back in this direction. I understand it’s only for a single race, but it’s exciting to briefly relive what introduced me to Formula 1.”

I have mixed feelings bout this. Love the retro look, but the orange and white was quite iconic too. But i guess change is good.
