Lamborghini has released information regarding the first full-scale test of its WEC and IMSA LMDh contender, the SC63 LMDh. The testing began last Thursday, with the car in action captured by F1 Flow.com, and continued into Friday. Andrea Caldarelli, Mirko Bortolotti, and Daniil Kvyat were responsible for the driving.
This marked the second time the vehicle has been tested, with the SC63 previously given an initial run at Vallelunga earlier in the month. The upcoming race car was managed by a collaborative team from Lamborghini’s in-house motorsport department, Squadra Corse, and the Iron Lynx team, who will be exclusively handling the car in full WEC and long-distance IMSA races in 2024.
Lamborghini’s brief statement highlighted that the Imola test was mainly centered on calibrating the car and acquiring data. The process also included the first track development of the custom-made 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 engine created by Squadra Corse for the SC63.
Additional testing sessions are scheduled at Paul Ricard and Spa-Francorchamps later this month, and the testing program is set to shift to the US in September with the release of the second chassis.
Built on the foundation of the next-generation Ligier LMP2 chassis, the SC63 is slated to make its racing debut at the WEC’s opening round in Qatar next March. However, Lamborghini has noted that they won’t participate in the first of IMSA’s North American Endurance Cup rounds at Daytona in January, making the Sebring 12 Hours, two weeks after Qatar, its US debut.
Romain Grosjean, one of the four announced drivers for the program, missed the recent Imola test as he was racing in the IndyCar Series. Regarding the other drivers, Lamborghini revealed at the Goodwood Festival of Speed that the remaining seats have already been filled. Speculation surrounds one of those seats, with Mercedes GT star Raffaele Marciello rumored to be joining BMW’s LMDh program with the M Hybrid V8.
