Johnson, originally on the roster for his fourth Cup participation of the year with the No. 84 Legacy Motor Club Chevrolet at the inaugural event, has pulled out.
This year, Johnson has already competed in the season’s opening Daytona 500, COTA, and the Coke 600. He also contributed to the Garage 56 NASCAR team at the 24 Hours of Le Mans held earlier this month.
The decision to withdraw from the Chicago race was made in the wake of a horrific family catastrophe involving Chandra, Jimmie’s spouse of nearly two decades. Chandra’s parents, Jack and Terry Janway, as well as her 11-year-old nephew Dalton, were all tragically lost in what law enforcement believes to be a potential murder-suicide.
The incident occurred on Monday evening in Muskogee, Oklahoma.
Understandably, Johnson has stepped down from the upcoming race, and the following statement was released by the team he co-owns:
“Legacy Motor Club has decided to withdraw the No. 84 Carvana Chevrolet from this weekend’s NASCAR Cup Series event in Chicago.
“The Johnson family has requested privacy during this period, and no further statements will be issued.”
NASCAR also released a statement, expressing: “We are deeply saddened by the tragic passing of Chandra Johnson’s family members. The entire NASCAR family extends its heartfelt support and sympathies during this challenging time to Chandra, Jimmie and the entire Johnson & Janway families.”
