Seven-time world champion, Hamilton, finished third in the Canadian Grand Prix, behind Fernando Alonso and Max Verstappen, the latter sealing Red Bull’s century of championship victories with a 9.57-second lead.
Hamilton demonstrated a robust start, overtaking Alonso, who began on the front row, at the very first corner. Despite a close call with a potentially unsafe release during the first round of pitstops, Hamilton managed to stay ahead, forcing the Aston Martin driver to brake.
Despite Hamilton’s early lead, Alonso persevered and managed to retake the second position with the help of the Drag Reduction System (DRS) at the final chicane on the 22nd lap out of 70.
While Hamilton managed to reduce the gap to two seconds in the last stage, Alonso counteracted by reducing his lap times to solidify his second position.
Hamilton acknowledged that Mercedes was slightly outperformed by the AMR23 – which unveiled new sidepod bodywork and an updated floor this weekend – particularly in Montreal’s prevalent low-speed corners.
Expressing his feelings, he said, “Regrettably, our pace wasn’t up to mark today. We anticipated that this circuit would be a challenge due to our struggle in low-speed corners.
“That’s where I was noticeably lagging behind Fernando and Max, mostly on traction coming out of Turn 2, and essentially every other corner.

“But we have quite a bit of work ahead of us, specifically to enhance the car’s rear downforce and improve its efficiency.
“We’re making progress, as I mentioned, and I’m optimistic that we’ll catch up eventually.
“Max was slightly out of reach. However, I feel our pace was somewhat more competitive today. So, we’re on the right track.”
Hamilton, who considered it an “honour” to share the podium with fellow world champions Alonso and Verstappen, conceded that Aston Martin was marginally superior to his Mercedes team in the Canadian round.
He added, “Frankly, it’s been a rewarding weekend for us. We’re gradually closing the gap. Aston made a small advancement this weekend with their upgrades.
“We’re committed to developing and implementing more improvements moving forward.”
