Formula 1 2024 Calendar Unveiled: 24 Races and Chinese GP Makes a Comeback
The upcoming calendar for next year closely resembles the initial announcement for 2023, featuring the return of the Chinese Grand Prix and no addition of new events.
An interesting twist for the season is that the first two races will take place on Saturdays. The second round in Saudi Arabia has been moved from Sunday to accommodate Ramadan, while the Bahrain opener from the previous weekend has also shifted a day earlier to maintain the usual time gap between events.
The introduction of this year’s inaugural Las Vegas race has paved the way for the revival of Saturday race days, which were once customary in South Africa and Silverstone until 1977.
The 2024 calendar also demonstrates the efforts made by the F1 organization to address logistical and sustainability concerns. Some races have been grouped together in a more geographically logical manner, particularly the events in the Middle East.
China, a vital market for F1 and Liberty Media, was included in the provisional 2023 schedule, which comprised 24 races. However, due to the persistent impact of COVID-19, it was removed, making this the fourth consecutive year without the Chinese GP. Additionally, the last-minute cancellation of the Emilia Romagna race in Imola has left this season with a total of 22 races.
The Bahrain Grand Prix will serve as next year’s season opener, following the official three-day test at the same venue from February 21 to 23.
In 2023, there was a gap between the Bahrain and Saudi races as teams were hesitant to participate in a double-header immediately after testing. However, in the upcoming season, the two events will run on consecutive weekends, resulting in a significant reduction in personnel travel. Most team members are expected to stay in the region rather than returning to Europe, as was the case this year.
F1 has long acknowledged that some established races may need to change their traditional dates. Japan, for instance, has shifted from its usual late-season slot to early April. Suzuka has effectively swapped places with Azerbaijan, which now precedes Singapore in a September double-header.
Similar to this season’s calendar, Imola will be followed immediately by Monaco. However, there is a change as these two races are no longer part of a triple-header with Spain. The Barcelona event has been moved to late June, forming the first part of an even more challenging triple-header that also includes Austria and Great Britain.
Apart from Baku’s move to September, another notable change from 2023 is that Qatar has been relocated as the penultimate race. It forms a triple-header following Las Vegas and precedes the season finale in Abu Dhabi. Both of these races will take place in December, making 2024 the latest conclusion to an F1 season since 2021.
