Ben Sulayem Seeks Involvement of American and Chinese Manufacturer Teams in F1

Ben Sulayem, amid ongoing reviews of potential new F1 entries starting from 2025, has expressed his desire for the inclusion of manufacturer teams from the world’s largest economies – the USA and China. He believes this could immensely benefit the racing league.

In his conversation with F1 Flow.com’s associate website F1 Flow-total.com, Sulayem projected that the participation of automobile manufacturers from the USA and China would significantly enhance F1’s public appeal and marketing image.

Sulayem expressed, “My aspiration is to see a complete team from an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) in the USA, and I’d also like to see an OEM from China in the race.”

He continued, “Dreams are allowed. And this is achievable. Considering China’s population of 1.4 billion, over half of the automobiles on the road, particularly electric ones, are Chinese made. This is a fact that denotes a large market.”

Sulayem is of the opinion that F1’s hybrid rule from 2026, featuring a 50/50 power distribution between internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric power, could be a compelling formula to entice the OEMs he is eager to include.

The American car heavyweight, Ford, has already confirmed a collaboration with Red Bull for working on the team’s new engines from 2026. Similarly, General Motors has allied its Cadillac brand with the Andretti squad hoping to be one of F1’s new contenders. However, Chinese manufacturers are yet to make a significant foray into F1.

Sulayem’s efforts to draw in major manufacturers comes at a time when existing teams and F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali have voiced some reservations about the advantages of expanding the grid. Despite these doubts, Sulayem believes it is FIA’s responsibility to attract as many teams as permitted by the rules. He is confident that Liberty Media, the F1 owner, and its president Greg Maffei, back his vision.

Referencing a statement made by Maffei during a Walker Webcast appearance in June, Sulayem stated, “I was pleased to hear Liberty Media endorsing the addition of another team.”

However, Maffei did note that adding more teams presents certain challenges, such as the lack of garage space at some circuits and financial implications for the current teams.
