Following six podium finishes in the initial eight races, the team’s performance has faltered somewhat as McLaren has picked up the pace and Mercedes consistently maintains its presence at the front.
Alonso maintains an optimistic outlook, stating his lack of concern, given that the team’s current situation is a marked improvement from where it stood this time the previous year.
“The team’s morale is quite high,” the Spanish racer shared. “Honestly, each weekend, each race feels like a party. I remember being in Spa last year after the August break, post-contract-signing, when they were ninth in the constructors’ championship. Williams was the only team lagging behind them.
“Now, we’ve managed to surpass Ferrari, for instance. That’s simply phenomenal. So, the first half of 2023 has taken us completely by surprise.
“We started off with a bang, and continue to relish the perks of this car, our new facility, the revitalized team spirit, and so on.
“Admittedly, we’ve seen a dip in performance in recent events. However, it’s not as drastic as the media inquiries make it out to be. We were a mere four-tenths away from the pole position last weekend, a staggering achievement considering our 2022 season, even though we ranked eighth.”
